Whether you've opted for an Android Wear 2.0 watch like the LG Watch Sport, or you're thinking about using an older version of Android Wear 1.0 smartwatch, you could be forgiven for wondering how use smart watches on android wear.
The tiny screens and complex features of the best smartwatches mean they can take a bit of getting used to, so we've compiled a list of the best tips and tricks to make using your Android Wear smartwatch easier.

We've sorted everything out to separate Wear 2.0 tips and tricks (above) from these handy tips for those still rocking the old version of Google's smartwatch operating system.

Like the Apple Watch, Android Wear 2.0 lets you customize a bunch of personalized watch faces for the round and square faces of your smartwatch, and then switch between them. Maybe you like the sporty style of the watch face and the time and other data display that shows your stats, but there's a more classic look to the output. Customize a few to your liking, then simply switch between them by swiping left and right on the screen. Super easy way to change.

Record your favorite apps

If you have a lot of apps on your watch, it can be tedious scrolling through the list to find them all. But if you have a few top ones, go to the app drawer and pin them to the top of the menu by simply holding your finger on the icon for a second. It will then move to the top of the list and receive a small star icon to indicate that it is "profitable".

Share one number

The LG Watch Sport and LG Urbane LTE smartwatches offer cellular connectivity, which means you can make and receive calls handheld from your smartwatch. Ideally, you don't want to get a second phone number, but some networks, including AT&T, allow you to use the same number on all your gadgets. If you get a smartwatch with LTE, it's worth checking to see if you can do it without having to buy a second number.
Android Wear 2.0 gives smartwatches a lot more offline functionality, but to get the most out of it, you'll want to have your watch connected. Once you've set up your new smartwatch, make sure (assuming it's supported) you're connecting it directly to Wi-Fi, meaning you'll be able to browse the Play Store and use features like Google Assistant no matter where your phone is nearby and whether it works. If you didn't do this on your phone during setup, you can connect to Wi-Fi from within your watch by going to Settings > Connectivity > Wi-Fi.

Customize your buttons

Wear 2.0 opens up the ability to customize the buttons on your watch, allowing you to create shortcuts to your favorite features. Start in Settings > Personalization > Customize your hardware buttons to choose what you want them to do. If you plan to use Android Pay, we recommend dedicating at least one button for convenience.

Typing on a smartwatch's onscreen keyboard isn't ideal, but on Android Wear it's actually not that bad. However, to make life a little easier, we recommend playing around with the configurations a little. Go to Settings > Personalization > Input Methods and then tap Google Keyboard. Here you will have access to a selection of preferences, but it is in Text Correction that you will find most convenient. You can toggle with auto correction, auto capitalization, next word suggestions and other options to make typing easier on your smartwatch.

Use Google Assistant to control your smart home

Google's answer to Alexa and Siri can become much more useful after you've used some tweaks in the Android Wear app. In addition to asking questions about your program or running apps, you can also use Assistant to control your smart home devices. Open the Android Wear app and tap the Settings icon. Scroll down and select Settings in Assistant and you'll see the option to set up controls for supported devices and create rooms so you can tell your clock to turn on the lights in the bathroom or hallway.

Still make sure Google Now is working

While Google's maps-based personal assistant has essentially evolved into an assistant, it still exists through your feed. This native app still pulls into your latest search history, pulling in relevant information, be it sports scores or weather updates. You can find your channel located at the bottom of the application window.

Quick Settings

Now it's much easier to quickly configure things if the need arises Android Wear 2.0. All you have to do is swipe down to reveal a bunch of quick settings - it's easy to forever wonder how you lived without it. You'll get things like airplane mode and brightness settings.

Theater Mode

Speaking of which... Using Theater Mode You're in a movie theater, having a great time, laughing, crying, and whatnot. But then you get too excited, you move your hand and your watch lights up like a Christmas tree. Shame on you - just turn on theater mode. To do this, swipe down to get to quick settings, then tap the brightness icon. =You will see options to increase and decrease the brightness, but you will also see a square with a diagonal line. Tap this and activate Theater mode, which will turn off your screen. To turn off the mode, simply press the power button.

Tired of typing on your tiny watch screen? You'll be able to use your finger to draw letters that turn into words, and what's pretty cool is that the screen automatically scrolls to the right to give you more space to draw more letters. If you don't have LG Watch Sport, you can download the keyboard from Play Store.

However, you may have to switch between the regular keyboard and the handwriting keyboard. Before you start typing, you'll be given a choice: do you want to use voice control or the keyboard? Long press the keyboard logo and you can switch to the handwriting keyboard.

Wearable is one of the strongest arguments for wearable devices. It's much more convenient when you press your wrist into the scanner rather than having to retrieve your phone or wallet. Plus, it saves the people behind you in line a lot of time. To set up Android Pay, you need to download the app on your phone and set it up first. Once you do this, open the application Android Pay on your watch and select a new card. This will take you back to your phone where you will select a card, agree to some terms and conditions and confirm your account.

Once that's all taken care of, you can customize one of the side buttons on watches like LG Watch Sport to be a button Android Pay. Then everything is easy. Press this button and then press your wrist to pay.

If you're still using Android Wear 1.x, these tips are for you.

Head to the Android Wear app on your phone to see how much battery life is left in your time zone - tap the cog icon on the first page, then select your time zone name, and you'll see the Watch battery and Watch storage menu.

You can also see which apps are draining battery life and taking up space on your watch. From this same menu, you can turn on or off the always-on and tilt features (where the watch display automatically turns on when you lift it towards you).

To quickly check the remaining battery life on the watch itself, drag down from the top of the watch's main surface. Displays the date, Wi-Fi status, and current notification mode.

One of the reasons to get a Wear smartphone for Android is to have access to some hands-free features without having to pull out your phone, and one of those features is Google Assistant. When the smartwatch screen is active, say "OK Google" on your device, and then say your question or command: try to "identify" any word or "play" any song or "lyrics", then any of your contacts.
Through the Android Wear app, you can set default apps for some of these commands.

We would like to draw your attention to a fantastic web service called IFTTT(If This Then That) which allows you to connect all kinds of applications and services. Luckily for our purposes, it has an Android Wear trigger.
This means you can use any IFTTT action to create a notification on your wrist: when your phone's battery is below 15 percent, or when bad weather arrives, or when your favorite YouTube uploads a video.
You can register and use IFTTT to be able to play with the available applets.

Spam notification you didn't want to get rid of? Swipe down from the top of the screen immediately after and you'll notice the Reject... countdown. Simply press the cancel icon and the map will reappear on the watch display in its previous position.
This is a handy feature if you're trying to quickly clear your screen of a bunch of minor notifications and inadvertently get rid of an urgent email or text you want to check again (in some cases the alert will still turn on your phone too).

If you dig into the list of built-in apps for Android Wear, you'll notice that Reminders is there, and having a reminder on your wrist is even more convenient than having the app on your phone in your pocket. Tap the plus icon to set reminders, and Android Wear will guide you through the process of setting up your memory player, including time and location if required.

None of you are more fans of Android Wear than the members of the Wareable team, but even we have to admit that smart home user support for the platform is severely lacking. There are virtually no official apps for big names like Philips Hue, and not much in the way of third-party solutions.

One exception is WrisTemp, which allows you to control your smart thermostat from your Google-powered wrist device. It works quite well while you expect large companies to get their act together.

With an early update to Android Wear, you can set your watch right from Google Play rather than relying on the ones that came pre-installed on your device. Install them from the web or the Play Store app and they will automatically be available on your watch.

Another feature is the ability to view, manage and change watch hours in the Android Wear app on your mobile device, as well as on the smartwatch itself. On your watch, touch and hold the watch face to change it to a different one or customize one that's already loaded.

If you're really adventurous, you can create your own watch face designs for your Android Wear smartwatch.

You can store audio tracks on your watch and listen to them even when your phone is out of range, which is great for the morning run—you just need to make sure you sync the tracks you want ahead of time.
For now, this offline feature only works with Google's own Play app.
Open the app on your phone, go to the settings screen, and you'll notice a new option called "Download to Android Wear" - turn this on to start syncing songs to your smartwatch. Tap the Manage Uploads entry to choose which of your playlists sync.

If your phone has disappeared and is not visible on your smartwatch, you can use Android Wear to find it. Open the app list by pressing your watch's physical button or swiping left on the front home screen, then select Find My Phone. After a few seconds, a command is sent to your phone that launches it. Helpfully, it works even if your phone is muted or in do not disturb mode.

Google Fit is slowly becoming more prominent in Android Wear, and one of the entries you now get in the OS app menu is Fit Activity. Tap this and not only can you track activities like walking and running, you can also get instructions for simple exercises like press crunches and squats.
There are even several assemblies Google Fit, which you should find on your Android Wear smartphone, which will show your steps and other daily activities at a glance, right on the surface.

Take control of the types of notifications you see on your watch through the Android Wear app: If you go to the settings screen (via the cog icon) and select Block app notifications, you can select the apps you don't want to hear.

On the watch itself, swipe from left to right until you see the Block app icon. Click this and you won't hear from him again.

If your phone is running Android 6.0 or later, then the settings on the watch will not be affected like on the phone. On your watch, you can drag from the top of the time zone to set a special “alarms only” mode.

If you're on your smartphone and your smartphone, you don't necessarily want both of them constantly chatting throughout the day, but Android allows you to mute your mobile phone if your Android Wear device is paired.

You need to head to the Android Wear app on your phone, tap the cog icon on the first page, and then toggle the switch labeled Silence phone while wearing the watch.

Notifications will still appear on your phone, they just won't make the noise, which should be less annoying for friends, family, and coworkers nearby.

If you're worried about someone using an Android Wear smartwatch to open a garage door or take a cab ride after you turn it off, you can automatically lock the device as soon as you release it from your wrist.
Open the Device Settings menu and select Screen Lock. You will then be asked to cross out a pattern on the screen that you will need to enter in the future to unlock your watch once you have removed it from your wrist.

We could all use a little more battery life from our gadgets, and the easiest way to get more out of your Android smartphone is to uncheck the Always-on screen option in the Android Wear app.

Your smartwatch still lights up when you move your hand towards your face, and alerts you when you have a notification so you won't miss anything.

Just like on your phone, you can also improve battery life by lowering the brightness of your watch display and making sure it's turned on as low as possible. The Android Wear Settings app has an option called Brightness Adjustment, which you can find by double-tapping the screen or pressing the physical button on your watch.

In a number of messaging apps, including Google's own Messenger and Hangouts, you can reply with emojis if you find the text a little old-fashioned. If text appears, such as when you press the Reply button (keep scrolling left to see it), a Draw emoji tab will appear with other options (like voice input).

Select Draw emoji, draw the one you want to use, and Android Wear will try to find a match. You can then select it to include in your message.

There's a hidden Font Size menu in Android Wear's Settings menu that you might have missed. Tap it to make all text on your Android Wear screen larger and easier to read.

Other options for those who might try to use the smartwatch using the default interface, including text to speech and zoom, can be found in the Accessibility section.

Android Wear has two specialized modes: Cinema (which turns off the screen and disables vibrations) for those snapshots, and Sunlight or Brightness (which makes the screen brighter) for trying to read the display outdoors. Swipe the sides, then swipe right to find them.

Sunlight mode only lasts a few seconds, but Cinema mode is harder to escape: double-tap the screen or press the physical button on the side of your watch (if it has one) to return to normal operation. Oh, and if you're in the US, "cinema" is called "theater".

Make a best friend on Android Wear

The Together app (find it in the app menu on your watch) lets you point to one of your favorite Google contacts using Android Wear, then send those customized emotes, stickers, doodles, and status updates.

If you think this sounds just like the doodles and Heartbeat features built into the Apple Watch, you'd be right, but it's still a great idea for that special someone in your life. Everything is handled through a dedicated Together gatekeeper.

One of the early updates released for Android Wear added support for additional gesture controls along with new audio feedback features for certain devices.

By flinging his wrist while wearing Android Wear, he rotates the screen and flicks, and the rotations can also show notifications or perhaps another app.

The newest gestures include moving your wrist up and down to do things on maps: tap your hand to select something, for example, or lift your hand up to return to the screen or map.

Advanced Android Wear Features and Tricks

If you're familiar with the standard Android developer tools, you can unlock and customize your Android Wear smartwatch just as easily as your phone. On the "About" screen in the "Settings" section, enter the build number seven times to become a "developer".

You then access another menu in Settings - many of which are only of interest to real developers, but you can sideload apps that aren't in the Google Play store and access many previously hidden options. We don't have time to go into them all and write about it here, but you can find a lot of information available on the Internet.

Operating system for wearable devices Android Wear has changed significantly since it was first announced in 2014. At first, only a few manufacturers were producing gadgets on this platform - mainly Motorola and LG. These days, many mobile phone manufacturers have shown interest in Android Wear, focusing their efforts on developing smartwatches and fitness trackers. And even well-known brands that market their watches have begun to use the Android platform, creating electronic versions of their models.

With the significant increase in the number of smartwatches, it is difficult to keep track of which smart watches are currently the best. First of all, most devices are very similar in software and hardware, so the most significant factor when choosing a gadget remains, perhaps, its design. To help you make an informed decision about which watch is right for you, we've rounded up the Android Wear smartwatches we think are the best. And, of course, if you like anything from this review, you can buy this smart watch today.

1. LG Watch Sport

We are ready to award this smart chronometer first place. Along with the launch, Google and LG took charge of the design of two new smartwatches, showing off a significant update to the devices' appearance. The older model is , and is currently the best Android Wear smartwatch you can buy right now.

The Watch Sport has almost all the features you could need while using this device: large AMOLED display, built-in GPS, optical heart rate monitor, LTE connectivity, IP68 dust and water resistance, and payment support Android Pay. The main button on the right side of the device also serves to scroll through menus in Android Wear, making navigation much faster and more confident. The price of the device is quite high and amounts to $349, but we think the LG Watch Sport is worth the money.

Specifications:

  • 1.38-inch POLED display with a resolution of 480 x 480 pixels and a density of 348 ppi;
  • 768 MB RAM;
  • 4 GB of built-in storage;
  • Battery 420 mAh;
  • Dimensions 45.4 x 51.21 x 14.2 mm, weight 89.4 g;
  • IP68 dust and water protection.

2.LG Watch Style

As mentioned, LG and Google have created two watch models, and a second smartwatch was also introduced along with Android Wear 2.0. It's not as cool as the Watch Sport, but it's still a great option if you want a cheaper, less bulky smartwatch running Android Wear 2.0.

Unlike the Sport model, Watch Style does not support NFC for mobile payments, and also does not have built-in GPS, LTE connection or heart rate sensor. While these omissions may seem significant to many, it's worth noting that not everyone is looking to own a huge watch with a ton of features. The LG Watch Siyle is a stylish, well-performing Android Wear 2.0 accessory that doesn't try to be generic or try to take on too much. Overall, this is an excellent smart timepiece that provides not only a way to save money, but also a reason to think about how organically a more functional, but much larger watch would look on your wrist.

Specifications:

  • 1.2-inch POLED display with 360 x 360 resolution and 299 ppi density;
  • Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor;
  • 512 MB RAM;
  • 4 GB of built-in storage;
  • Battery 240 mAh;
  • Dimensions 42.3 x 45.7 x 10.79 mm, weight 46 g;
  • IP67 dust and water protection.

3.Huawei Watch 2

Overall, this is another good showcase of Android Wear 2.0's capabilities, although there are a few things to consider before purchasing this smartwatch.

Android Wear 2.0 has a special focus on fitness features, but unfortunately Huawei failed to both go very far in this direction and not lose sight of other important aspects that are not related to a healthy lifestyle, but are no less important for users. The fact is that this smartwatch does not have a rotating side button for navigation, which is a huge omission - after all, such a button on the LG Watch Sport is very convenient and popular with users. But the device comes with great battery life and an excellent set of features.

Another factor that you will have to come to terms with if you choose the Huawei Watch 2 is the design: without a doubt, the smartwatch does not look as stylish as the original Huawei watch, the case of which is almost indistinguishable from the usual ones. Of course, there is also the Huawei Watch 2 Classic, which looks a little better, but it is also difficult to compare with this elegant watch. Huawei Watch 2 costs $349 and is an interesting device, but in a world where there is already an LG Watch Sport, it is quite difficult to recommend this new smartwatch from Huawei. However, if you like the look of them and don't mind the lack of a rotating navigation button, they could be a good buy for healthy lifestyle enthusiasts.

Specifications:

  • 1.2-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 390 x 390, and a pixel density of 326 ppi per square inch;
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor;
  • 768 MB RAM;
  • 4 GB of built-in storage;
  • Battery 420 mAh;
  • Dimensions 48.9 x 45 x 12.6 mm, weight 57 g
  • IP68 dust and water protection.

4. Polar M600

New sports watches Polar M600- the best sports tracker based on Android Wear today. With built-in GPS, intrusion protection water IPX8, optical heart rate monitor and 4GB of built-in storage, the M600 can be called an all-in-one device. The tracker also comes with support for the amazing Polar app for Flow, allowing you to track almost any active physical activity you can imagine: paddling, skiing, hiking and more. You also don't have to worry about recharging for two days, which is a record-breaking battery life for an Android Wear watch.

For a tracker, the Polar M600 is very expensive - its price starts at $329. Sure, you can find Android Wear devices for less, but the M600 provides much more functionality than other gadgets. If you're shopping for one of the hybrid devices - something that combines the capabilities of a smartwatch and a fitness tracker - and don't mind spending a little more than $300, look no further. No manufacturer will offer you anything better yet.

Specifications

  • 1.3-inch TFT display with 240 x 240 resolution, 260 ppi;
  • 1.2 GHz dual-core MediaTek MT2601 processor;
  • 512 MB RAM;
  • 4 GB of built-in storage;

5. Moto 360 Sport

If you're a fan of the second generation but want something more, you should take a closer look at Moto 360 Sport. This smartwatch has basically the same internal specs as the Moto 360, plus GPS tracking capabilities. The battery on this device suffers a bit from the always-on GPS module, but the reduced battery life can easily be forgiven when you consider the watch's other great features. For example, this model has a hybrid display that is anti-glare, making it easy to view information outdoors. The device is protected from dust and water according to international standards. IP67 standard, which is also very good.

Overall, this is a good option on the Android Wear platform if you need to somehow monitor your physical activity and body condition. At the moment, the Moto 360 Sport only tracks heart rate, but Motorola promises that in the future, additional capabilities will be added to the watch, in addition to a heart rate sensor. The price of Moto 360 Sport on the company’s official website starts from $199.99, but you can find the device much cheaper on Amazon.

So we see a list of the best wearable devices on the Android Wear platform today. Did we miss something? We are waiting for your additions in the comments.

Since its first announcement back in 2014, the Android Wear platform has changed significantly. Initially there were only a few smartwatches from LG and Motorola. These days, many smartphone manufacturers have launched their Android Wear smartwatches, including even traditional watch brands.

Thanks to the significant increase in the number of smartwatches, it has become increasingly difficult to identify clear leaders and best models.

First, most Android Wear smartwatches are very similar in terms of software and hardware, leaving little room for design. So take a look at our top best smartwatches based on Android Wear.

LG Watch Sport - the best of them all

Along with the launch of Android Wear 2.0, Google and LG introduced two new smartwatch models. The top-of-the-line option is the best Android Wear watch you can currently buy.

LG Watch Sport has all the features that a smartwatch should have - a large AMOLED screen, built-in GPS, heart rate sensor, LTE modem and IP68 protection and, of course, support for Android Pay. The main button on the right side scrolls through the menu, which is the fastest navigation option.

They are expensive, 350 USD (it is difficult to find them in Russia), but they are worth it.

LG Watch Sport specifications:

  • 1.38", AMOLED screen with a resolution of 480×480, 348 ppi
  • Snapdragon Wear 2100 chipset
  • 768 MB RAM
  • 4 GB ROM
  • Battery 420 mAh
  • Dimensions 45h x 51 x 14 mm, weight 90 grams

LG Watch Style - Second Best of All

As mentioned earlier, this model was introduced along with Android Wear 2.0. While it may not be as special as the older Watch Sport, it's still a great option and much more comfortable for everyday wear.

Unlike the Sport version, it does not support NFC payments and does not have built-in GPS, LTE or a heart rate sensor. And although the absence of these will seem like a significant disadvantage to many, it is worth noting that not everyone needs a bulky watch with a lot of functions.

The LG Watch Style is a stylish, well-performing Android Wear 2.0 watch that doesn't ask for much. This is a great option, and you should pay attention, they are more convenient than others.

LG Watch Style Specifications:

  • 1.2", AMOLED screen with a resolution of 360*360, 299 ppi
  • Snapdragon Wear 2100 chipset
  • 512 MB RAM
  • 4 GB ROM
  • Battery 240 mAh
  • 42x46x11 mm and weight 46 grams

Huawei Watch 2 - worth a closer look

This is another good demonstration of Android Wear 2.0's capabilities, although there are some things to know before purchasing.

Android Wear 2.0 comes with a set of features focused on sports and fitness, but Huawei has gone too far in this direction and played too hard. They are too sporty, which means they are not suitable for everyone.

Of course, there is also a classic version, Huawei Watch 2 Classic, which looks quite strict, but even it cannot compete in elegance with the first Huawei Watch.

The cost of around 22,000 rubles makes watches from Huawei an interesting, but controversial proposal. However, if you like a stylish gadget and don't mind the lack of a side button, then this is an obvious choice.

Huawei Watch 2 specifications:

  • 1.2", AMOLED screen with a resolution of 390*390, 326 ppi
  • Snapdragon Wear 2100 chipset
  • 768 MB RAM
  • 4 GB GPE
  • Battery 420 mAh
  • 49x45x13 mm and weight 57 grams
  • Dust and moisture protection according to IP68 standard

Polar M600 - ideal for sports

The Polar M600 smartwatch is the best sports gadget based on Android Wear 2.0.

With built-in GPS, IPX8 protection, heart rate sensor and 4GB of memory, the M600 is a multi-functional device.

They are equipped with proprietary Flow technology, which tracks any activity imaginable, be it rowing, skiing, hiking and much more. You can also squeeze about two days of battery life out of it, which is impressive for a smartwatch.

The price is really high and starts at 25,000 rubles. Of course, you can find devices at a lower price, but the M600 will provide you with much more functionality.

Characteristics of Polar M600:

  • 1.3", TFT screen with a resolution of 240*240, 260 ppi
  • MediaTek MT2601 1.2 GHz chipset
  • 512 MB RAM
  • 4 GB ROM
  • Battery 500 mAh
  • 45x36x13 mm and weight 63 grams
  • Dust and moisture protection according to IPX8 standard

Motorola 360 Sport - a good watch for sports

The Moto 360 Sport has a very bright AnyLight Hybrid display that is easy to read outdoors and is IP67 rated.

In general, this is an option for those who need a sports component to track their exercise. There is support for tracking while jogging. Moto says more functionality will be added in the future.

The price for Motorola 360 Sport starts at 11,000 rubles, which is cheaper than other options.

Motorola 360 Sport specifications:

  • 1.37" AnyLight Hybrid screen with a resolution of 360*325, 263 ppi
  • Snapdragon 400 chipset
  • 512 MB RAM
  • 4 GB ROM

  • 45x45x12 mm and weight 54 grams

The best smartwatch models – 2018 under $300

There are quite a few budget watch options on the market. This doesn't mean they are bad at all. Cheap models simply have fewer functions and the interface is not as fast and rich as that of representatives of the expensive segment. You can buy such a thing as a gift for a child, or for the first acquaintance with a new gadget.

Meizu Mix

At first glance, the watch looks like the most ordinary mechanical one - a round white dial with real hands. Stylish and discreet appearance in a waterproof protected case.

The watch does not have many functions:

  • Pedometer. You can keep statistics of the distance you have traveled, as well as the calories burned. You will first have to configure your anthropometric parameters in the application that controls the watch.

  • Reminders for scheduled events. They will also need to be entered into the calendar of the management application in advance.

The watch has a battery, which, according to the manufacturer, should last for 240 days of operation, and when the charge runs out, the battery will have to be replaced.
