Performance
Here we must pay tribute, the devices cope well with everyday tasks. I didn’t observe any freezes or glitches, everything was smooth and beautiful. The system, together with the shell, eats up about half of the RAM, and the remaining 1.5 GB is generally enough to work with several applications. In extreme multitasking (more than 5 applications), the devices are already beginning to unload running programs from memory, but there is nothing surprising here.
But synthetic performance tests produced very modest results. In everyday use this may not have an effect, but heavy games, for example, suffer greatly from such indicators. And the numbers of the Galaxy J4 are completely depressing in themselves.
Let's move on to the games.
PUBG mobile on Galaxy J6 runs only on low graphics settings, but it runs smoothly. On the Galaxy J4, the picture often twitched even at low settings, but there were no significant lags. After 35 minutes of playing, the smartphones actually discharged by 10% and heated up to 35-36 degrees (according to CPU-Z) - the result is adequate.

It is also comfortable to play World of Tanks only on low settings, because on medium it starts to stutter and spoils the process, and on high it can freeze mercilessly. With time and charge consumption, the situation on the J6 is the same - 10% in 35 minutes. The screenshots, however, indicate a completely minuscule expense, but this is not true. The J4 has better energy saving: 7% of the charge was consumed in 35 minutes.
Cameras
The camera module is not disclosed by the manufacturer, but the parameters of both devices are the same: 13 megapixels with f/1.9 aperture. Let's look at examples of pictures in comparison. To begin with, a photo taken with the main lens in sunny weather, with and without HDR:

As you can see, overall the picture looks good, although it does not strike the imagination with its appearance. The difference between the HDR mode and the auto mode is small: weak lightening of dark areas and improved contrast of the sky. And for some reason, I personally have the impression that the J4 shoots a little better. At night the following results are obtained:

A special “night mode” wildly overexposes the image, everything becomes yellow, blurry and overly bright. As I found out through trial and error, HDR is more applicable to night conditions; photos are obtained with acceptable lighting. The detailing, however, is poor here too, and the graininess of the frames is simply off scale.
At night you won’t be able to shoot anything suitable for any camera.
Let's move on to the front camera. Galaxy J6 offers 8 megapixels (f/1.9), Galaxy J4 – 5 megapixels (f/2.2). Let's start with the older model: in addition to regular selfies, you can also take portraits with blur, and also apply a bunch of animated masks to your face. What comes out of all this, see below:

In general, the quality is not bad, only when using filters and masks it drops sharply: the picture turns out to be heavily overexposed and suffers overall. So it’s better to play with this only in a room with good light. The Galaxy J4 does not offer such features; there we can only take a widescreen selfie (also available in the J6).

By the way, every smartphone has a front-facing flash, so you can do selfies at any time of the day. Well, only with quality and detail the situation does not change, at least on the street: low clarity, graininess, excessive yellowness.

As for video, each model can only record 1080p videos; 4K resolution will not be available to their owners. But the video is recorded with high quality, with good detail. True, there is no automatic stabilizer here, so the picture can move in different directions. Let's look at examples:
Software
Everything is bad with functionality, and especially in the Samsung Galaxy J4. There’s not even automatic brightness adjustment, so let’s talk about any smart gestures and virtual buttons. Although the older model also differed only in the presence of a fingerprint scanner and face unlock, everything else is identical.
Yes, in the Galaxy J6 you can also customize the display of on-screen buttons - but no matter how you configure them, they are always there on the main screen, and during use you still have to manually push them up by swiping up, because the device is not fully adapted to work without them.
Button settings
The face sensor in the Galaxy J6 (2018) sometimes works slowly, sometimes you have to wait 2-3 seconds until the phone “recognizes” a familiar face. There are no problems with the fingerprint scanner, everything is fast and without failures. True, the scanner itself is not very convenient, it seems to be too narrow, and therefore you can’t always get your finger on it completely.
Big minus – there is no LED for notifications
Not in any model. True, it offers a repeat vibration and signal function if you pick up the phone, but this is a bit of a strange solution, and, frankly speaking, it doesn’t always work. And, unfortunately, only this is available - there is not even any activation of the screen when notified. So there is a high risk of missing something important, and that's not cool.
Sound
In headphones, the phones play really loudly, but frankly there is not enough low end, and at maximum volume the sound begins to get quite “dirty” - the problems affect both Samsung devices. And the overall sound itself is average, nothing outstanding. But this is to be expected. To improve the quality, you can turn on the Dolby Atmos function with different modes - it will help, but not much.
The Dolby function works only with headphones; for an external speaker there is an equalizer with various improvements and effects. Yes, all this adds some depth and character to the sound, but in the end the sound is average in quality, which is almost wheezing at maximum volume, and only so-so audible at medium volume.
By the way, the Galaxy J6 also has a “separate sound from application” feature, which allows, for example, to play music from a player on external speakers, and everything else (a game or video) on the phone.
Autonomous operation
Battery life is the main advantage of smartphones
Perhaps the batteries are the only unconditional advantage compared to the rest. Both devices have a 3,000 mAh battery, but the results of its performance are different, and here the Galaxy J4 comes out the winner. With fairly active use from 10 am (Internet, calls, social networks, camera, music, brightness above average + outdoor mode, screen for more than 3 hours), the device retained as much as 62% charge by 1 am!
The next day, with the same use and games to boot, the smartphone lasted until almost 20:00 without an overnight charge (with a screen operating time of more than 6.5 hours). The indicators are really cool, this smartphone pleasantly surprised me.
The Galaxy J6 has a worse picture, but in its case I fit everything I could into one day. So, starting at 8:30 in the morning with maximum load (Internet, social networks, calls, camera, games, maps + navigator, music, brightness above average + “outdoor” mode), the smartphone was discharged to 30% by nine in the evening, while the screen worked 4.5 hours. Then the mode of use was gentle, and by midnight 15% remained (6 hours of screen time).
To summarize, we can say that with all the shortcomings and shortcomings of smartphones, you can be sure that they will last at least a whole day, under any load. The only fly in the ointment is the charging time. It takes an average of 2.5 hours for the J6 to replenish the full battery capacity, and all of 3 hours for the J4. Yes, fast charging was not introduced, but the excellent autonomy of the devices in this case makes up for this shortcoming.
Bottom line
It's sad that Samsung pays all its attention only to the top-end “S” series, because a negligent attitude towards the lower segments gives rise to the Galaxy J4 (2018) and Galaxy J6 (2018). They don’t have a set of really necessary things, and what they do have, in half the cases, resembles hack work. For me personally, the only 100% advantage is the J4’s battery life and the J6’s fingerprint scanner/face unlock. And the latter still looks good. As for the rest, there are constant reservations, shortcomings, and comments. Of which, given the current cost of devices, there are actually a lot of them.
Of course, the favorite in this comparison is the Samsung Galaxy J6 (2018), and if you choose one from this pair, it will be this one, although the price seems really overpriced. And if we consider both devices not only in a mutual comparison, but in general against the background of the current smartphone market, then you can find much better options, and at the same time, damn it, cheaper.
